Cease the Grease
Cease the Grease
Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG), the residue left over from cooking meats such as bacon that hardens after it cools, can cause problems when poured down the drain and clog pipes in your home.

Holiday cooking is fast approaching and here are a few simple rules to help you avoid unnecessary clogged drains and damage to the sewer system.

Do!
  • Put oil and grease in covered collection containers.
  • Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash cans and garbage bags and dispose of properly. Avoid using your garbage disposal.
  • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pans, fryers, and griddles. Cool first before you skim, scrape, or wipe off excess grease.
  • Prewash dishes and pans with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher.
  • Cover kitchen sink with catch basket and empty into garbage can as needed.
  • Cover floor drain with fine screen and empty into garbage can as needed.

Don't!
  • Don’t pour oil and grease down the drain.
  • Don’t put food scraps down the drain.
  • Don’t rinse off oil and grease with hot water.

The Environmental Collection Center (ECC), located at 6400 Bridge Street in east Fort Worth, accepts turkey fryer oil, other cooking oils, and motor oil; however, please bring used cooking oil in its own separate container, do not mix motor oil with cooking oil. The food oils are recycled to create bio-diesel fuel. The Center is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and it’s FREE to Azle residents if you show your utility bill! The Center is closed on City holidays. For more information, call the ECC at 817-392-3279, visit Fort Worth Environmental Management, or go to the NCTCOG website.
